Dr. Hubert E. Bray received the first PhD awarded by the Rice Institute in 1918 and joined the mathematics faculty that same year. His influence was felt, not only in the mathematics department, but the University as a whole – upon his retirement in 1959 he was named to a unique position: Trustees Distinguished Professor of Mathematics.
Honoring the request of the Bray children, the Hubert E. Bray Prize in Mathematics is awarded each spring to the outstanding junior mathematics major. Started in 1990, the recipient is chosen by the faculty of the Department of Mathematics.
